Children Conference ‘Future Belongs to You’ – 12th July 2010
ASR/IWSL organized a children conference ‘Future Belongs to You’ for the ASR Summer School students on 12th July, 2010 at Qasar-e-Noor, Lahore
The objective of this conference was “to give an opportunity to the children to share their feelings with elders about issues of Women’s Rights and Gender Inequality, Minority Rights and Equality of Citizenship, Peace and Peaceful Resolution of Conflicts, and its impacts on their community. This was also aimed at presenting a model summer school for public schools to raise awareness among the children about the equal citizenship rights for women and minorities and peace. Another purpose of Children Conference was to gather the school children on a platform and give them a chance to speak up on the important issues as well as listen to others opinions.
The conference was largely attended by the representatives of NGOs, educationists, human rights activists, media personals, Govt Officials and civil society. 150 children belonging to Muslim and Christian Communities with equal gender participation from seven districts of South Punjab had participated in it.
Nighat Said Khan (Executive Director of ASR/IWSL) was the moderator of the children conference. Three sessions were conducted which were on minorities, religion, women and peace. Six boys and six girls addressed the conference through their presentations while Additional Secretary for Human Rights and Minority Affairs, Mr. Usman Shehroz; Deputy Secretary for School Education Department and civil society members were the discussants and chaired the conference. After children presentations, panelists held a round of discussions on the issues came up in sessions.
The conference was started by School Anthum “Insaf Ki Dagar Par”. Children presented peace and harmony songs and committed to build strong Pakistan.
